The wonders of nature

The Murray River is in flood. My husband went camping there over the weekend and saw an extraordinary sight.

Murray Crays are a delicacy, highly protected and delicious (in the right season). This year, due to the high levels of tannin in the water, due to the floods, the crays are up on the bank. This happens very rarely, and is something my husband, who grew up on the river, has never seen before. The crays are very quiet and can almost be caught by hand - it is illegal to catch them at this time of the year, so let's hope the hordes of tourists who are flocking to the river are doing the right thing.

Some of them had climbed trees to escape the water, others were just sitting in the shallows. Quite incredible.

  2. Thank you for sharing these photos, Mary-anne. Seeing these crayfish is very telling about the how the weather impacts wildlife. Australia has such unusual creatures, and I, for one, really appreciate seeing how glorious life can be. How very interesting!
